M. NourbeSe Philip is a Toronto-based poet, essayist, novelist and playwright who was born in Tobago. Her poetry collections include Zong! (Wesleyan, 2008), She Tries Her Tongue, Her Silence Softly Breaks (Wesleyan, 2015; Ragweed, 1989), Thorns (Williams-Wallace, 1980), and Salmon Courage (Williams-Wallace, 1983). Her essay collections include A Genealogy of Resistance (Mercury Press, 1997), Showing Grit (Poui Publications, 1993), and Frontiers (Mercury Press, 1993). She has BA in economics from the University of the West Indies, and both an MA in political science and a law degree from the University of Western Ontario.
